Why am I so tired on my period?

Tiredness can happen around a period, including as part of premenstrual symptoms. But feeling exhausted is not something you have to push through. Heavy bleeding can also contribute to iron-deficiency anemia, and there are other reasons for fatigue that a clinician can check.

Ask for a manageable break when tiredness affects your day. Persistent exhaustion or fatigue with heavy bleeding deserves medical advice.

Start with what you need today

Give yourself room for rest, regular meals and enough sleep. If concentration or PE feels unusually difficult, ask for support rather than trying to prove that you can carry on.

A lower-energy day might mean choosing the essential homework first, taking a break between tasks or asking to sit out until you have spoken with the nurse. These are practical adjustments, not a treatment for unexplained exhaustion.

What is useful to tell a clinician?

  • When the tiredness began and whether it also happens outside your period.
  • Whether sleep seems to help.
  • How often you are changing fully soaked period products.
  • Whether you also feel dizzy, weak, short of breath or notice a racing heartbeat.
  • What the tiredness stops you from doing.

Make the impact clear

Should you take iron?

Do not start iron supplements just because you feel tired. A clinician can decide whether blood tests are needed and whether iron treatment is appropriate. Too much iron and unnecessary supplements can cause problems.

When to get help sooner

Get medical advice for fatigue that persists, is severe or regularly interrupts your day. If you faint, have chest pain, struggle to breathe or feel very unwell with heavy bleeding, get urgent help now. Tell an adult nearby; do not wait for your next period to see what happens.

If the main problem is feeling lightheaded, use the dizziness help plan. Sit or lie down safely and ask an adult to come to you instead of walking off alone.
