Why does my period smell?

A mild metallic smell can happen during a period because blood contains iron. A smell doesn’t automatically mean you’re unclean. A strong, fishy or persistent unusual smell, especially with itching, burning or pain, is worth asking a clinician about.

Keep washing gentle and outside-only. Fresh products and clean underwear are useful; scented sprays are not part of the routine.

Why it can smell a little like metal

You might notice a scent when changing a pad or using the bathroom. A slightly metallic smell can go with period blood. Bodies also have their own mild scent; being completely scent-free isn’t the goal.

A description like “metallic,” “fishy” or “different from usual” can help you explain a concern, but it cannot diagnose the cause. You don’t need to work through an online list of smells to earn an appointment.

A simple routine for a school day

  1. Make time for a change. For daytime pads, plan about every three to four hours, sooner if full or uncomfortable. Our pad-change guide has a school bathroom plan.
  2. Keep a spare handy. A pad and clean underwear give you a practical next step if you need them. Ask the nurse or another adult for supplies if you don’t have any.
  3. Keep washing gentle. Wash the outside skin with warm water and mild, unscented soap. Don’t wash inside the vagina or use douches, deodorants or scented intimate wipes.

Scented pads or tampons can irritate skin. If you’re choosing a packet, an unscented option is a simple place to start. You don’t need a special fragrance to manage a period.

Can other people smell my period?

Noticing a smell while you change a product doesn’t tell you what someone sitting next to you notices. Keep to your usual washing and changing routine; repeatedly checking or adding perfume won’t give you a useful answer.

When to ask for help

Ask a trusted adult to help you arrange medical advice if a strong or unusual smell persists, or if you also have itching, burning, a change in discharge or pain when you pee. Don’t cover it up with scented products or choose a treatment based only on the smell.

Starting a private conversation — change the blank

I’ve noticed a different smell and ___. Could you help me arrange a private chat with a doctor or nurse?

You can describe what changed without sending a photo. If you want help finding the words, the description you already have is a useful starting point.

What if I’m not bleeding yet?

Clear or white discharge can appear before a first period. That is a different question from how period blood smells. The discharge guide explains what it can look like and what to do next.
