Yes. You can shower, bathe and wash your hair during your period. You don’t need to wait for bleeding to stop or use a tampon just to take a shower.

Dry towels on hooks beside a closed shower curtain and a shelf of clean supplies.
Keep clean, dry supplies ready for afterward. Wash gently on the outside; you do not need to wash inside the vagina.

How to shower on your period without a tampon

Set out a towel, clean underwear and your next pad or other period product before stepping in. If you use pads, you can attach a fresh one to the clean underwear first so it’s ready afterward.

Before: clean underwear + fresh product + towel.
During: wash gently as usual.
After: dry off + put on clean protection + carry on with your day.

What happens to the blood?

You may notice a little blood washing away. A shower isn’t a way to end or pause a period, and seeing blood doesn’t mean you need to stop washing. There’s no need to try to clean inside your body.

Keep washing gentle

Wash the outside genital area gently; the vagina cleans itself internally. Skip douching and scented sprays or intimate deodorants. Extra fragrance isn’t necessary for period hygiene and can irritate skin.

Can you shower with a tampon in?

Take off a pad with your underwear before showering and put on a fresh one afterward. If you already have a tampon in, showering with it is okay, but it’s a good idea to change it when you get out because it can get wet and absorb less period blood. You can also shower without one. A shower doesn’t reset a tampon’s wear time. See the 4–8-hour change guidance and eight-hour limit.

If you are getting dressed with a pad afterward, here is how to attach the sticky side and fold the wings. For a damp string after a bathroom visit, see peeing with a tampon in.

What about a shared bathroom or camp shower?

Take your towel, clean underwear and next product into the changing area before undressing. Keep clean supplies dry and find the disposal bin before taking off a used pad. If the shower cubicle has no bin, wrap the pad and carry it to a suitable bin afterward; do not flush it.

You can use the same preparation for a sleepover. For a trip with limited sinks or bins, the camping guide helps you plan access before leaving.

If you feel awkward about it

You can make your first shower during a period a quiet, ordinary task: gather supplies, take your time, and get dressed. You don’t need to monitor every drop. If a little blood gets on a washable towel, use our cold-water stain guide.

For a persistent unusual odor, itching or pain, ask a healthcare professional rather than trying stronger washes. Getting advice is more useful than covering a symptom with perfume.
