How does period underwear work?

Period underwear has absorbent layers that collect menstrual blood after it leaves your body. You wear it like underwear, then wash it for reuse. How much it holds and how long you can wear it depend on the particular pair and your flow.

Period underwear has an absorbent panel built in. Check the product’s instructions and keep a clean spare while you learn what works for you.

Start with the pair’s instructions

Look for its size, absorbency, maximum wear guidance and care label. Different products have different capacities. A claim like “all day” isn’t a promise that it will handle your own flow until bedtime.

Change sooner if the underwear feels wet, uncomfortable or starts leaking. General guidance is to change within 8–12 hours or as needed; follow a shorter product limit and your flow. You may need more frequent changes.

A first-try plan

  1. Wash the pair before first use, following its label.
  2. Try it when you can easily change clothes, rather than making a long school trip your first experiment.
  3. Keep another period product and clean underwear available.
  4. Notice whether the fit stays comfortable when you sit and move.
  5. After changing, follow the washing directions so the pair is ready for another use.

Can you wear it without a pad?

Many pairs are designed to work on their own for the flow they are rated for. Some people use them as backup with another product. Check what your particular pair is designed to do; you don’t have to buy several products to qualify as “prepared.”

Think through a school-day change

Changing underwear can mean taking off shoes and pants in a stall. Before choosing it for a long day, think about whether that bathroom setup will work for you. Pack a clean pair or an alternative and a bag for bringing used underwear home.

How long does period underwear last?

Hours of wear and the lifespan of the pair are different limits. Change for your flow and the product’s wear instructions; check the maker’s replacement guidance for how long to keep reusing it. Our washing guide explains when to replace a pair.

If someone helps with your laundry

These are period underwear. Can we check the washing label together before they go in the laundry?

Ordinary period underwear isn’t automatically swimwear. Check our pool guide before wearing it in water. For everyday care, use the washing checklist.
