Follow the care label on your specific period underwear. Many pairs need a cold wash and air-drying, but detergent, drying and replacement instructions can vary. Wash before first wear and after each use as directed.

Check the care label, rinse and wash as directed, then dry as directed. Different products can have different care instructions.

Your label is the starting point

Before the first wash, check four things: water temperature, which detergent to use, whether it can go in the dryer, and whether it can go in with other clothes. Take a photo of the label if it’s hard to read while doing laundry.

Save this routine:
Check the label → rinse if directed → wash → dry completely → put away.
Keep the clean pair separate from the one waiting to be washed.

What does a typical wash look like?

A cold-water rinse can remove blood before washing. Then wash according to the label with a suitable detergent. Avoid fabric softener when the instructions say to; don’t add bleach, scent boosters or a hot dryer cycle on the assumption that stronger cleaning must be better.

For example, Thinx’s current instructions specify cold washing and line drying for its period underwear, with no ironing, bleaching or dry cleaning. That is one manufacturer’s guidance, not a rule for every brand.

Can it go in with other laundry?

Check the product instructions. Advice differs: some general health guidance suggests a separate load, while manufacturers may allow washing with other clothes. Match the pair’s label, compatible colors and care needs rather than using one rule for all products.

When you change at school

Use a bag to carry the used pair home, away from clean supplies. Empty the bag when you get home and start the care routine; don’t leave the underwear forgotten in your backpack. Wash a reusable carrying bag according to its own instructions too.

How long will a pair last?

There isn’t one reliable lifespan for every product. Follow the maker’s replacement instructions, and check for damaged fabric or reduced performance. Having a backup while a pair dries is more useful than assuming it will always be ready by morning.
